Yes, by "our founder" I mean me, Isaac D. Van Wesep. I founded Wine on Deck, Inc. in June 2010, just four months after I bought my first woodworking tool (a Bosch router) and plunged into the world of furniture making. Wine on Deck's Wine Wings are a big part of what I do every day. But when I'm not making Wine Wings (or marketing them), I'm learning about furniture making as fast as I can.
That means reading a lot of books - about finishing, joinery, designing all types of furniture, the cellular structure of different wood species, tool sharpening...and the list goes on. More importantly, I make furniture, both for my family and for clients. To date, I've made three bookshelves (my earliest pieces), two small tables (also early work), a few aquarium stands (using traditional frame-and-panel cabinet construction), two pairs of loudspeakers (in process as I write), and - currently - a chest of drawers.
People are often surprised to hear that I take custom commissions, given my short (10 months) experience as a self-taught woodworker. I remind them I don't take just any commission: I only take those that I can easily do, or that push my skills a bit, but not too much. For example, I wouldn't accept a commission for Victorian armchairs, or a bow-front bureau. Likewise, my joinery is limited to just a few simple joints: tongue-and-groove, mortise & floating tenon, dado, & miter (though last week I made my first 12-inch long sliding dovetail, with moderate success).
Visit my woodworking blog, IDVW Design & Woodworking, to get a look at what I'm doing now, and what I've done in the past. You can look all the way back to those first bookshelves, and right up to my current project, a re-build of a chest of drawers, using renewable bamboo plywood stock.
Who knows, you might even be inspired to ask me to make for you that "dream piece" of furniture you've been thinking about for years. My skills are up to the demands of most modern (1950's and later) designs, and I'm always eager to tackle a challenge. In such cases, my quote for the job includes a guarantee the finished piece will be well-made and good-looking, no matter how many times I have to re-do it before presenting it to my client. This policy keeps me working on challenging projects that test my skills, while ensuring the client doesn't suffer from my inexperience. So far, my commission work has been satisfying for both my clients and me.
